The Number 2 Consumer Of Energy In The Household

One thing a house can’t do without, especially in Miami, Florida is Air Conditioning. That’s why it’s no surprise that your AC is the number one consumer of energy in the household. But number two might come as a bit of a surprise to some…Its your swimming pool motor.

That’s right, your single speed swimming pool motor can actually consume as much energy as all of your other appliances put together and is the number 2 consumer of energy in the household.

The Number 2 Consumer Of Energy In The Household

If we compare several domestic appliances like a washing machine, a kitchen cooker or a fridge, a pool pump consumes as much as 7 fridges! That means that a single speed pool pump produces indirectly about 1,380,000 grams of CO2, which is equivalent to 138 trees. The IntelliFlo can provide tremendous energy savings. When operated at low speeds its energy consumptionis reduced by as much as 80% compared with a regular single speed pool pump.

Who would of thought? But after thinking about it, doesn’t it make more sense. Your swimming pool motor is literally a 1 horsepower motor running on high, non stop for 8 hours a day (I’m speculating). And for those of you who don’t know, those motors rotate at 3450 RPM! That’s moving! Just as an example as to how fast that really is, put your hand on the top of your motor after it’s been on for a while. It’s scorching hot. You could almost fry an egg on that thing! In some cases I think you could literally fry an egg. That’s why letting your motor run dry (without water) is such a big deal, because of the heat generated. They can actually get so hot without water that they melt your PVC pipe. This is why the lifespan is so short compared to a variable speed motor.

But when variable speed pumps were first introduced by Pentair, people thought they were crazy! We were looking for a way to make pool pumps and motors cheaper for the consumer. After all the shorter the lifespan of a single speed motor, the more motors they could sell. So when the first variable speed pump and motor was presented at more than double the cost of a single speed, nobody thought it was a good idea; As innovation goes…

But maybe we were looking at this from the wrong perspective. Of course initial cost is always the first concern but should it be? (only in America). It’s like when I used to work for a family friends company that sold specialty building products. When I first started I didn’t know much about the industry and its products. So every phone call I took, when the customer would ask me “how much,” I would tell them because that’s really the only thing I did know. The problem was, it seemed like that’s all they were interested in. And shouldn’t they be more interested in the actual product they’re buying before the price?

So as I began to learn more about the industry my boss told me “I want the pricing to be the last thing out of your mouth”. So from then on, even though the customer was asking me for pricing, I was making up excuses like “I’m doing the numbers now” or “Mikee is pulling your file for me” when really I was just buying myself some time to try and educate them on what it is they were calling about. So they had no choice but to listen to what I was saying. Because lets be honest, your calling about something you may not really know anything about, but you still want a good price. But if the first thing out of my mouth was $1200.00 I’ve lost your interest before I even had a chance to talk.

So lets talk about what variable speed pumps bring to the table other than cost. And let me start by saying they truly have revolutionized the swimming pool industry and I wouldn’t put any other motor on my pool.

Variable speed pumps such as the Pentair IntelliFlo and Hayward Ecostar have 8 easy to use programmable speeds and an internal timer. This means you can set your pump to run on high for the hottest part of the day and lower speeds throughout the rest of the day and even into the night.

They use a 3HP impeller which means on high they run at 3HP. This will more than suite your pools circulation needs. For most residential pools you shouldn’t need more than a 2HP motor. So your motor will almost never need to operate at maximum capacity, which will make it last longer and operate quieter.

They use Hybrid technology similar to that used in todays Hybrid cars. Unlike single speed induction-style motors that produce a lot of vibration the Variable Speed pumps use an advanced permanent magnet motor that not only runs cooler and produces significantly less vibration but it juristically reduces energy consumption. This is where savings of up to 90% an estimated $1200.00 – $1500.00 per year become possible. So they actually pay for themselves within the first year and then start saving you money every year after.

Along with its permanent magnet motor the totally enclosed fan-cooled design protects the motor from the elements and lets these pumps operate at 45 decibels! This is impressively quite at regular speed and on low speed you may literally mistake it for being off!

Built in diagnostics protect these pumps for longer service life. They can last up to 3 times longer than traditional pumps. One of these great features is that they will not run without water. They recognize the absence of water and will shot off immediately instead of running dry for hours on end like single speed motors do.

Simply put it is superior engineering. But the whole idea behind these variable speed motors is to cut standard single speed motor speeds in half and run for longer periods of time. Traditional pumps operate at set, unchangeable speeds, which are usually much higher than needed.

When water moves more slowly for longer periods, it helps reduce the occurrence of algae that forms more easily when water is pumped briskly and then allowed to rest for long intervals. Your filter works more effectively because it has more time to sift out particles from the water, and because particles aren’t forced through the filter media under needlessly high pressure. Automatic chemical dispensers and chlorinators also work better when water is kept moving.
